Dear Professor Martin:
Michael Genesereth is an assistant professor in our department
working on artificial intelligence. He devised the logic programming
language MRS and has supervised a number of good PhD theses. We are
currently considering him for tenure and I suppose will make a decision
around February. I think his chances are quite good, but we haven't
received letters from his references yet.
Anyway when I mentioned to him your inquiry about people
in artificial intelligence and offered to write you about him, he
asked me to do that, since he is considering his options. Also
he is a Harvard graduate, and this makes Harvard especially interesting
for him.
His strongest points are energy and the ability to inspire
students and to organize their work. He is also an excellent teacher,
as I can testify from having taught short courses jointly with him
on two occasions. He has also taken charge successfully of various
activities in the Stanford Computer Science Department and in the
American Association for Artificial Intelligence.
Concentration on my own interests
has prevented me from studying MRS enough to develop an independent
opinion on how much of a contribution it is.
He will be in the East shortly and may call you. He is certainly
worth talking to and considering in the same category as the people you
wrote me about.
Sincerely,
